First date ideas in Derby that beat a drink in the pub

From Darley Park and the Cathedral Quarter to Carsington Water and Dovedale: twelve easy, local first dates.

A couple crossing a river on a wooden footbridge in a green Peak District valley

A drink in the pub is fine. But Derby has riverside parks, free museums and the Peak District on its doorstep, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early if the spark isn't there. Here are twelve ideas from around the city and beyond.

Out in the open

1. Darley Park and the Derwent

A lovely stretch of parkland by the River Derwent, just north of the city centre. Walk along the river towards Darley Abbey and its old mills. Free, and a great way to see if you get on.

2. Markeaton Park

Derby's big, busy park, with a lake, open grass and a café. Easy to find, easy to park and easy to extend if it's going well.

3. Elvaston Castle Country Park

Woodland walks, a lake and a Gothic castle, just east of the city. A relaxed wander here makes a lovely first date.

4. Carsington Water

A big reservoir on the edge of the Peak District, with a walk all the way round and a visitor centre for a warm drink afterwards.

5. The stepping stones at Dovedale

One of the most famous walks in the Peak District. Cross the stepping stones, follow the river up the dale and see where the conversation takes you. Wear sensible shoes.

Culture and a bit of shelter

6. Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Free, central and home to a large collection of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby. Talking about what you're looking at is a natural icebreaker.

7. The Museum of Making

In the old Silk Mill by the river, often called the world's first factory. Free, hands on and full of things to talk about.

8. A wander round the Cathedral Quarter

Independent shops, cafés and some of the city's oldest pubs, all within a few streets of Derby Cathedral. A relaxed place to wander, with plenty of spots to sit down and talk.

9. Kedleston Hall

A grand National Trust house with parkland walks just outside the city. Check opening times and prices before you go.

10. Cromford Mills and the Derwent Valley

The heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Walk by the canal, look round the old mills, then find somewhere for lunch.

Keep it simple

11. A coffee in Belper or Ashbourne

Both towns have plenty of independent cafés. Short, low key and easy to extend if it's going well.

12. A show at Derby Theatre

From plays to comedy and music, there's usually something on. Something to talk about on the way home.

A few tips before you go

  • Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
  • Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Check the weather and opening times before you set off.
  • Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
